At Least 62 Dead in Japan After Series of Powerful Earthquakes

Strongest quake in Japan in years triggers tsunami warnings

Rescue efforts under way as four million households without power

A series of powerful earthquakes has hit western Japan, leaving at least 62 people dead and dozens missing. The strongest quake, with a magnitude of 7.5, struck on Monday and triggered tsunami warnings. Three other quakes with magnitudes of 6.1, 5.9, and 5.7 followed, causing widespread damage and power outages.

The earthquakes have caused significant damage to buildings, roads, and bridges. More than 4 million households are without power, and water supplies have been disrupted in some areas. Rescue efforts are under way, but access to some affected areas is difficult due to landslides and road damage.

The government has deployed more than 25,000 troops to assist with the relief effort. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited the affected area and pledged to provide all necessary support.
