France converted all their kicks in a shootout to edge Portugal 5-3 on penalties after a goalless stalemate in their European Championship quarterfinal.
Both teams struggled to manufacture offense in the first half as Portugal got off just three shots with none coming on goal while France got off one shot that was saved. The second half was more of the same as neither team could find a breakthrough.
In the shootout, France converted all five of their kicks while Portugal missed two. Kylian Mbappe scored the winning penalty for France.
France will now face Spain in the semifinals on Thursday. Portugal's tournament is over.
